What is a primer?

The component of a pistol or rifle that ignites the gunpowder is called a primer. As a result, the ammunition is forced out of the gun barrel through combustion.

Some analysts compare the primer to a miniature volcano or rocket engine that spews burning slag into the cartridge’s gunpowder.

Why are Primers so Expensive Now?

The recent pandemic has unquestionably impacted the ammunition market. One of the most powerful forces at work in the market is consumer demand, and when ammo production can’t keep up with it, shortages result. Insufficient raw materials for primers and powder can make the problem worse.

How do I re-prime my cases?

To re-prime:

  • First, you need to de-prime using a de-priming die or sizing die.
  • Next, clean the primer pockets, with various tools available, to remove the carbon buildup.
  • Clean your cases and trim/chamfer if necessary.
  • Now your cases are ready to insert the new primer. This is done using a handheld, press-mounted, or bench-mounted priming tool. After this step, you are ready to measure and load the powder.

What should I consider when reloading and handling primers?

When reloading and handling primers, consider the following:

  • Always refer to a loading manual to see which primers to use.
  • Test different primers to find the one that offers you the most accuracy
  • Avoid touching the primers with your hands, as oils can affect reliability.
  • Use safety glasses to protect your eyes from possible explosions and injuries during the priming of cases.
